Choosing strong lilies, now and later

The future of lily farming begins with choices made today. At Bredefleur, we are aware of this every day. The selection of lily varieties determines not only the quality of our lilies, but also the sustainability, continuity and resilience of our cultivation. By making conscious choices and looking far ahead, we are building a future-proof company step by step.

New variety development: long-term choices

“The basis of every strong lily starts with the variety,” says Thomas Evers, co-owner of Bredefleur and responsible for bulb procurement and cultivation. “We have long since stopped looking only at how a lily looks in the vase. Where the focus used to be on efflorescence, shape and color, we now look much broader: at the quality, vitality and health of the lily bulb.”

“Increasingly, we are consciously choosing varieties that can grow well on their own. Lilies that are strong and resilient, cope better with changing conditions and are less sensitive to diseases and viruses. By being involved in the development of new varieties at an early stage, we are gaining a sharper insight into which lilies fit our vision and the cultivation of the future. In this way, we make choices that not only work well today, but also contribute to stable and sustainable production in the long term.”

Connection our core value: growing together through sustainable agreements

Connection is one of Bredefleur's most important core values. We believe in long-term collaborations, clear agreements and mutual trust. Not focused on quick profit, but on stable growth for everyone involved.

Working together from shared goals creates room to invest in quality, innovation and sustainability. Only when all links in the chain become stronger can we build a future in which everyone benefits. This way of working is an important starting point for our choices, also when it comes to variety development and cultivation strategy.

Sustainability is a conscious responsibility

For Bredefleur, sustainability is not a marketing term, but a daily responsibility. It means that we deal consciously with our environment, our people and our cultivation. We continuously look at how we can reduce our impact and improve our processes.

At our cultivation sites, we are taking targeted steps in the areas of energy use, water, biodiversity and crop protection. At the same time, we consider it important to take good care of our employees and invest in safe, pleasant and future-oriented workplaces.

By seeking strength within ourselves and having the will to do better every day, we find that partners and other stakeholders grow with us. Our identity and core values translate more and more clearly into the lilies we grow: strong, reliable varieties that can grow on their own and are ready for the future.

Good variety choices are thus not an endpoint, but an ongoing process driven by vision, cooperation and accountability.
