Oliver Luyckx: My two 'mathematical' lily designs
A floral designer with a little math
I am a floral designer, but also a bit of a mathematician. That's because I was inspired by the brilliant medieval Italian mathematician Leonardo Fibonacci. He juggled math and invented a sequence that we still use today, more than eight hundred years later.
Check out my last two lily designs incorporating his math of the gold scroll with the yellow lily Sainz and the red lily Original Love, both from the Dutch grower Bredefleur.
My two new lily designs
In these new two flower arrangements, I made sure the lilies play a prominent role. These flowers have a high attention value by themselves, so they stand out anyway. So why not accentuate this even more and let the accents shift to the details? In this way, the lilies carry the arrangement, while the other flowers are given free rein.
The yellow design
The yellow design is set up as a parallel arrangement, with the beautiful yellow lilies taking center stage as the central flower. They are placed in the base of bio foam, combined with grasses, Crocosmia, sunflowers and willow branches. This choice of materials creates a harmonious whole, with the lilies as the radiant centerpiece.
See how this table centerpiece with lily Sainz summer radiates! It is like walking through a field of flowers on a relaxing summer day, with birds and bees circling around you.
The red design
In the red design, on the other hand, the Original Love lilies processed in a very theatrical way, where they seem to break out of the base. The arrangement is carefully constructed, with a base of branches, rose hips, dancing Clematis and Crocosmia. The combination of these elements creates a dynamic and vibrant whole.
Because I used the full length of the flowers, it became a rather tall decoration. Lilies lend themselves perfectly to large and tall designs, as you can see. And then when they start blooming, the theater opens its doors and lets you know that the show has begun!
The Fibonacci series
Enough math for one day? If you have an eye for it, you may have noticed that both my floral arrangements are designed according to Fibonacci's golden ratio 3/5/8, a series of logical growths based on idealized assumptions, which makes for a natural and balanced composition.
The lilies were chosen for their large and impressive flower heads, which give a wonderful visual effect to the arrangements. Their color and shape make them real eye-catchers. The use of different textures and heights creates depth and interest, inviting the viewer to explore every detail. These floral arrangements exude craftsmanship and creativity, bringing a sense of beauty and harmony to any space where they are displayed.
